Action for Stammering Children is delighted to publish the Top 10 Priorities for future research into childhood stammering, following the conclusion of a two-and-a-half-year project involving the stammering community.
Since the end of 2021, Action for Stammering Children has been leading the first ever James Lind Alliance (JLA) Priority Setting Partnership into Developmental Childhood Stammering. Working closely with a steering group comprising young people who stammer, parents/caregivers, health and education professionals, and partners from across the stammering community, the outcomes of this project have now been published.
A Priority Setting Partnership (PSP) brings patients, caregivers and professionals together to identify questions that remain unanswered by existing research and to collectively agree the priorities for future research in a health area. Leading this PSP has been a core focus of the charity’s research work to date, offering a rare opportunity to put the voices of young people who stammer, their families, and professionals at the heart of the research agenda.
On 18th September 2024, researchers and funders came together for the launch of the Top 10 at University College London (UCL). During this afternoon seminar, we heard about the impact of the PSP from the perspective of academics in the field, research funders, and young people with lived experience of stammering. The workshop session offered an invaluable opportunity to start the conversation about how these priorities can be addressed by future research projects.
Through the systematic JLA process over 300 individuals have contributed to the final Top 10, which reflect the areas of research that will be most impactful to those with lived experience of stammering; ultimately helping to bridge the gap between children and young people who stammer, their families and researchers.
We are grateful to everyone who contributed to this process, the PSP steering group and partners, including the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) and STAMMA, the James Lind Alliance, and Woodroffe Benton who funded this project.
We look forward to working with our partners, researchers, funders, young people and the whole stammering community to make sure that the Top 10 shape the future of stammering research in the years to come.
