On 24th October 2024, ASC hosted their first ever International Stammering Awareness Day Pub Quiz. The event was a fantastic evening filled with laughter, trivia and friendly competition. The fun event highlighted the theme of this year’s International Stammering Awareness Day; ‘The Power of Listening’ and raised £462 for the charity. These unrestricted funds will go directly toward helping children and young people access family support services, specialised speech therapy through our Talking Out Programme and crucial research into effective treatments and support structures.
The event was held at the Clerkenwell Tavern in Exmouth Market, and the venue generously donated a £100 prize for the winning quiz team. The event brought together friends, family and colleagues, each there to support ASC and children who stammer. Teams faced off against each other in six exciting quiz rounds with topics ranging from geography to riddles. The competitive, but friendly (!) atmosphere made the evening unforgettable, with teams vying for the coveted first place.
We were thrilled to have our Stambassador, Stuart Taylor, as our quiz host, whose charm and quick wit made the evening even more enjoyable. He kept the energy high and brought smiles to the crowd, donning a dazzling gold sequin jacket and fostering a spirit of inclusivity and support that aligns with our mission at ASC. Stuart’s previous experience on University Challenge set him up as a fantastic host for the evening and his hard work for ASC is extremely appreciated.
Stuart reflected on the night, saying “What a wonderful evening of joy, warmth and an amazing demonstration of communication. It showed how people who stammer make some of the best listeners, questioners, answerers, quizzers and – surprisingly in a quiz – singers! Thanks so much to all those who contributed to make this such a special evening.”
Ria reflected saying “We were thrilled to see so many members of our community come together to mark International Stammering Awareness Day 2024 with us. Bringing together friends, long-time supporters, and new faces, the pub quiz was a brilliant opportunity to showcase what we’re all about at Action for Stammering Children while raising awareness and funds to continue our work supporting children who stammer nationwide”.
The evening included a raffle which was a big hit, featuring amazing prizes generously donated by local businesses and supporters. The raffle raised over £200 for the charity, with a great deal of excitement surrounding it throughout the evening.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended, donated, and supported this event. Your enthusiasm and generosity made a powerful difference, not only by raising funds but by raising awareness around stammering and fostering a stronger community of support for children and young people navigating life with a stammer.
Thank you especially to Stuart Taylor, our incredible quizmaster, your contribution helped make the evening a true success.
Thank you again for making the first International Stammering Awareness Day Quiz Night an unforgettable evening in support of Action for Stammering Children. We can’t wait to see you at our next event!
