ASC Stambassador, Alan Crofts, is leading an ambitious expedition across the Atacama Desert to raise funds and awareness of childhood stammering. Through this partnership we aim to raise £120,000 to fund ASC’s Talking Out therapy programme for two years. This programme combines access to expert speech and language therapy with outdoor challenges to help participants build self-confidence, resilience and social connections. This partnership will help to ensure that ASC can continue to provide this life-changing support and raise awareness of stammering.
If you would like to learn more about the residential speech and language therapy courses, you can do so here.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Action for Stammering Children for our Atacama 2025 expedition,” said Alan Crofts, team member of the Into Clean Air Expedition. “This collaboration allows us to showcase environmental sustainability and support a cause that impacts many young lives.”

What difference will these courses make?
Here’s what some of the young people who attended the courses in previous years had to say about their experience:
“I didn’t talk much to people before I came on the Residential, then I found it easy to talk to a lot of strangers… I thought what is this magic? This strange thing that has happened? Now I talk to people.”
“Since the speaking circle I’ve found it easier to talk in front of groups of people. I’ve changed a lot. I’m talking more in class; asking and answering questions. I used to be terrified of the register now it’s ok.”
“I have never met so many people who have stammered before and it’s made me feel comfortable to speak openly to them and not focus on my stammer.”
We would also direct you to our recent BBC Lifeline Appeal to hear from two of our beneficiaries, Amy and Thomas, about the impact these courses had on them.
“Many children who stammer experience low self-confidence, become withdrawn and limit their aspirations. With early and effective support, these children have the chance to develop into confident communicators who will go on to realise their potential. That’s what initiatives like the Stambassador Network and our residential stammering courses offer. In nominating us as the expedition’s charity partner, Alan has provided us with an invaluable opportunity to raise the funds we need to continue our work supporting the 8% of children and young people who stammer across the UK “
