Training for the Marathon? Pft… I trained for the circus today (The Marathon runners win!)

by Balshen Izzet, Chief Executive

The Michael Palin Centre is buzzing with parents and 10-14 years old taking part in the two-week Intensive Course. Yesterday, our Vice-President Michael Palin came down to visit the Centre and show his support. He took the time to chat to the kids and their parents on the course about their experiences surrounding stammering. Michael’s dedication is unwavering and he continues to inspire both the children and parents.

As part of the two-week Intensive Course, the children take part in a special treat, a circus skills workshop organised by The National Centre for Circus Arts . Yes, that’s right, circus skills.

Today, I joined the group and tried my luck on the trapeze, learned how to juggle and walked the tightwire. Circus skills is a unique way for them to put the skills they have learnt on the course into practice. Confidence is key!

It’s that time again… Marathon season. Every year an amazing group of people dedicate themselves to the extraordinary challenge of training and running either half or full 26.2 miles to raise money for Action for Stammering Children (ASC).

And this year is no disappointment, Robert and Cass Sully are taking on the Brighton Marathon for their nephew who has a stammer. He attended the Michael Palin Centre’s two-week Intensive Course to build his confidence and learn strategies to deal with his stammer – his smile has returned! Robert and Cass have smashed their £1000 fundraising target, but you can help them raise even more by donating here.

Next up is Paula Williams who has really set the bar high by embarking on a challenge to cycle from London to Paris, some 500km in just four days. She’s raising money on behalf of her eight year-old son, who has a stammer but as she says he is not defined by his disfluency! Paula is also writing a blog about her journey – you can donate here.

The Holness family have gone all out and set up their own event, the Herne Bay to Margate Run or Cycle. They are raising money for the second year running for their daughter and have set themselves their highest fundraising target to date – donate here.

Last but not least, we are enormously proud of the Michael Palin Centre’s very own Rachel Young, who is one of the incredible staff members who make the work of the Michael Palin Centre possible, by being there for parents and children. In just little over a week she will be running the ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon, her first Marathon ever for ASC. It was supposed to her second, but unfortunately she injured her back and was out of action for six-week, the poor thing! She is so close to her fundraising target – help her get there by donating here.

We have even more people running later in the year so watch this space! All these amazing runners will be raising funds to help transform the lives of children who stammer.

If these guys have inspired you to pick up your running shoes for us – just drop us an email on [email protected] and we’ll do everything we can to get you started and fundraising.

We are extremely proud of you all, thank you so much!
