ASC Stambassador, Dr Alan Crofts, shares what he has been up to in support of Action for Stammering Children

I was the Team Strategy Leader for the “Into Clean Air Expedition” that took place in April and May 2025. The expedition went to the remote high passes of the Chilean Atacama Desert and the Bolivian salt pans to prove that remote, extreme expeditions can be carried out in vehicles using clean biomass derived fuel alternatives and solar energy.

It was very important to myself, personally that we used the expedition as a way to support ASC and to promote awareness of stammering in children and young adults. As a teenager I had a pronounced stammer and understand now that with a positive attitude and growing self-confidence that it need not restrict your activities or fulfilling your dreams.

The expedition itself was full of adventure and, yes, some risk – this is what you expect when going in unsupported into remote and extreme environments. We had a highly experienced team but the unexpected always may happen like almost losing one of the trucks while charging though an ever more precarious flooded Bolivian salt pan and penetrating the surface crust. For me though the highpoints were the teamwork displayed to overcome problems and waking up on a remote Chilean arid, high mountain plateau with the air temperature at -20°C and watching the sun rise.

Myself and the team are very proud of our association with Action for Stammering Children, Ria and the supportive staff and the activities they provide. My message is that you identify your interests and where you want to go – rather than a hindrance, your stammer can help develop strong life skills and release a passion for life and adventure as it did with me.
